Challenges 2013

I'll be tracking my progress in challenges on the 2013 Challenges page (except for the Canadian Book Challenge 6 which will remain on the 2012 Challenges page).

This year I'm participating in the Cruisin' Thru the Cozies 2013 challenge.

I plan to participate in at least a couple others, but first I have to sort out my schedule a bit more.  But expect this post to be edited.

Update: I am participating in the Postal Reading Challenge 2013.  I haven't quite decided on a level, but I might try for the highest.  I do love a good challenge.  The perfectionist in me worries though.  What if I can't do it?

Update 2: I'm participating in Historical Mystery Reading Challenge - 2013.  I don't have set books decided, but I have an idea of what authors/series I'd like to fit in.

I'm still working on the Flavia de Luce series (1950s), so that will be part of my reading.
I'd like to get back into the Rat Pack series.  (Which would mean You're Nobody 'til Somebody Kills You - 4th in the series and set in the early 1960s.)
I still need to read Gold Mountain by Vicki Delany (Klondike mystery - late 1890s)
I'd like to test out the Quincannon series by Bill Pronzini and sometims Marcia Muller (set in the 1890s in San Francisco)

2012 Mid-year Overview

June has ended, and with it, the first half of 2012.  While I've not been doing monthly reports, I thought I could do a bi-annual report.

By my calculations I've read 83 books so far in 2012 not counting short stories or children's books.  One of those was an audiobook.  Two were Mercedes Lackey re-reads that I didn't post.

I still need to work on finishing the Harlequin Silhouette 2012 Reading Challenge. I've read 3/6 of the books for that.

And I'm starting Operation: TBR Reduction today, so hopefully the 2nd half of the year will go well.  I'm also hoping to get more audio and e-books in.

Operation: TBR Reduction

Operation TBR Reduction Button

I just discovered this personal challenge started by Stephanie at Once Upon a Chapter via Fetch Me My Fainting Couch.

Since I was not aware of it prior to May 1, I'll officially begin my own efforts on July 1. If you've seen any of my multiple posts about Book Hoarding and Cleaning Out, you know I can really use this.

The rules, per Stephanie, are as follows:

*Read more books than I bring in per month. No excuses, no justifications, no wheedling. Just reading. *ALL books (with the exception of library books, they’ll just cancel themselves out) count towards my numbers. This includes review requests, trades, purchases, etc., etc.

EDITED: *Re-reading keepers doesn't count since they won't be leaving the house.

Wish me luck!

Happy New Year! Farewell to 2011...

So for the year of 2011... I finished 3 of 4 challenges (I came close on the 4th ... if only Short Stories counted).  I couldn't tell you how many books I read bc I lost track during my Great Blogging Decline of 2011.  I do know I read a LOT of mysteries, and that I read many first in series.

For 2012 ... HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

http://all-free-wallpaper-download.blogspot.com/2011/10/new-year-wallpaper-2012.html
I'm hoping to do better with my blogging now that I have my newer system.  (The recent individual blog entries were for the one challenge, fyi).  I'm hoping to catch up on the keeper authors I seem to have lost track of this past year.  And in a book related, but not reading related issue - I hope to cut back on how many books I actually own.  I'd like to be able to look through my books without moving boxes off of other boxes and actually find the books I'm hoping to read.

2012 Challenges

So 2012 is rushing in and brings with it new reading challenges.  In 2010 I bombed many of my challenges.  I've finished 2 of 4 2011 challenges so far and have found myself scrambling to finish the other two.  This year I'd like to chose challenges that, while adding a some challenge, won't have me waiting until the last minute to finish them.

Image obtained from http://all-free-wallpaper-download.blogspot.com/2011/10/new-year-wallpaper-2012.html

I'll be adding the challenges I've decided on to my new 2012 Challenges page.  But I learned this past year that I need a page for commenting and such as well, so this is it.  I'll link to them as I officially decide to participate.

Cruisin' thru the Cozies Reading Challenge 2012 - This one should be easier for me (hence the highest level) because I read a lot of cozies... I lost count for 2011.  But I look forward to 2012 cozy reading.

Harlequin Silhouette 2012 Reading Challenge - I breezed through this challenge last January, so it's pretty quick and simple.  But it's the only time I really read Harlequin/Silhouette any more, so I'm glad Evy (Islandgirl reads Romance) decided to host it.

...[more to come]...

The End? + Cozy Challenge

I hate to even suggest the possibility.  But I have gone, once again, over a month without blogging.  I didn't feel like posting on the books I was reading so I ended up not posting at all.  I had this big giveaway planned, and I'm thinking I might still have it.  As a last hurrah before closing this down.  But I don't really want to lose everything I've found here, either.  It makes me sick really, to contemplate such a thing.  As you can see, I'm rather torn over the matter... I don't know what I'll end up deciding, but at least you have a heads up.

In the meantime, I've been participating in this cozy challenge (the first week was a little long since not everyone was ready) for eight weeks.  Since July 2nd or 3rd I have read...

Curiosity Thrilled the Cat ; Sophie Kelly ; Magical Cats Mystery, Bk 1 ; Minnesota ; Librarian

A Tisket, a Tasket, a Fancy Stolen Casket ; Fran Rizer ; Callie Parrish Mystery, Bk 1 ; South Carolina ; Cosmetician (Mortuary Cosmetologist)

Hey Diddle Diddle, the Corpse and the Fiddle ; Fran Rizer ; Callie Parrish Mystery, Bk 2 ; South Carolina ; Cosmetician (Mortuary Cosmetologist)

Casket Case ; Fran Rizer ; Callie Parrish Mystery, Bk 3 ; South Carolina ; Cosmetician (Mortuary Cosmetologist)

I Scream, You Scream ; Wendy Lyn Watson ; Mystery à la Mode, Bk 1 ; Texas ; Proprietor of an Ice Cream Parlor

Scoop to Kill ; Wendy Lyn Watson ; Mystery à la Mode, Bk 2 ; Texas ; Proprietor of an Ice Cream Parlor

--------------------------End of Week 1------------------------------------------------------------------

A Parfait Murder ; Wendy Lyn Watson ; Mystery à la Mode, Bk 3 ; Texas ; Proprietor of an Ice Cream Parlor

Roast Mortem ; Cleo Coyle ; Coffeehouse Mystery, Bk 9 ; New York ; Manager/Partner of/in Coffeehouse

Challenges

It's that time of year. Challenges are cropping up everywhere. I have mixed reactions. Part guilt because I pretty much gave up on all 2010 challenges I had signed up for. And excitement, because they look so fun!

I'm pretty sure I'll be participating in the 2011 E-Book Challenge. I got a Sony Reader for Christmas last year, and haven't used it for the last several months. I wouldn't want my parents to think I don't really appreciate it. So that challenge will be perfect. And of course I'm going to want to participate in one or two genre challenges (mystery, paranormal, urban fanatasy, etc.). But I'm going to pick lower levels this time - even if I think I can do more.

And, to start things off right, I think I'm going to make a new Challenges page. If I make it right at the start, maybe I won't be overwhelmed trying to catch up.

Fall / Winter Mystery Reading Challenge Wrap Up

I participated in this challenge hosted by A.F. Heart @ Mysteries and My Musings.

This reading challenge ran from October 1 - February 28 for a total of 7 books in all over 5 months.

I did better with some categories than others.  I found the New Year's (Resolutions/New Beginnings) to be the most difficult.  With one more day I would have been able to meet the entire challenge with Leslie Meier's books, but as is, I did not get to the New Year's book.  Instead, I am using the book Throw Darts at a Cheesecake.

1 Paranormal or gothic mystery for Halloween (level of spookiness up to you)
** Plum Spooky by Janet Evanovich
** Trick or Treat Murder by Leslie Meier

2 Autumn/harvest/Thanksgiving related mystery
** Back to School Murder by Leslie Meier
** Turkey Day Murder by Leslie Meier
** The Diva Runs Out of Thyme by Krista Davis

2 Winter/snow/Xmas//Hanukah etc related mystery
** Mistletoe Murder by Leslie Meier
** Holiday Grind by Cleo Coyle
** Christmas Cookie Murder by Leslie Meier

1 resolutions/new begininngs related mystery
**Throw Darts at a Cheesecake by Denise Dietz - This is a book about a group of people who have resolved to lose weight.

Lord of the Rings Readalong

I just discovered this Lord of the Rings Readalong, and I am so excited! I've been meaning to read these books for years and have never even started.

Here are the deets:
Starting January 1, 2010, we’ll be reading one book from the series (including The Hobbit) each month with a goal of finishing all four books in April. We’ll be taking turns hosting the readalong, so you can follow our intrepid fellowship of readers around the blogosphere. Here’s where you’ll find us each month:

January: The Hobbit at A Striped Armchair

February: The Fellowship of the Ring at The Literary Omnivore

March: The Two Towers here at Shelf Love

April: The Return of the King at Just Add Books
Because of my late start, I seriosuly doubt I'll finish The Hobbit in January. But I'm looking forward to reading it along w/ the other three books. Plus, I may watch the movies as I read the books.

Here's hoping this is the motivation I needed...

The 2010 Young Adult Reading Challenge

I knew I planned to participate in this challenge, but was procrastinating on actually writing this post. The problem is, I'm supposed to choose a level, and I have NO IDEA how many books is even slightly realistic. I don't want the goal to be unreachable, and I don't want it to be too easy.

Anyway, since I've already been reading YA books this year, the time has come... I am hesitantly going with the Super Size Me YA Reading Challenge level (75 YA books), and reserve the right to edit this post to the next highest level (Stepping It Up) should there be need by the end of July (at least I have a deadline).

If you're interested in signing up, visit this page.

If you'd like to read reviews of books read for this challenge, you can do so here.

If you'd like to know who has completed this challenge, that information can be found here.

My 2010 YA reads include:
  1. shiver by Maggie Stiefvater [January]

National Just Read More Novels Month 2010

Guess I'm participating in this year's National Just Read More Novels Month (held by Foma*). I hadn't heard of it before (thanks J. Kaye), but it sounds great.  The books have to be novels and can't be re-reads.  The first shouldn't be much of a problem, and the second will just take some restraint.

I can't begin to guess how many I'll get finished since classes start Monday, but I think I've got a decent start so far...
  1. The Mournful Teddy by John J. Lamb
  2. The False-Hearted Teddy by John J. Lamb
  3. No Penalty for Love by Shellie Foltz
  4. The Crafty Teddy by John J. Lamb
