Unwanted

Title: Unwanted

Author: Jennifer Estep [Website][Facebook][Twitter]

Publisher: Pocket Star

Series: Elemental Assassin, Bk 14.5

ISBN: 9781501142291

Obtained: Library ebook copy

Why this book?:

First I LOVE this series.  Second, who wouldn't want Finn's thoughts on the drama that took place in book 14, Bitter Bite?

Comments:

I can't say too much without spoiling some of what happened in Bitter Bite.  Suffice it to say Finn feels very down about previous events, and is having an identity crisis.  But events happen, and he discovers a little violence (in the name of helping someone) is a good way to perk up, burn off some of the negative energy/emotions, and find a way to move along in life.

Length: 3 discs ; 3 hours, 38 minutes

Obtained: Library copy

Why this book?:

I already have an interest in fairy tales.  But also this received WONDERFUL reviews and is performed by an award-winning cast.

Comments:

I haven't ever read the actual Grimm Fairy Tales.  I'm more familiar with other variations (particularly Disney, but also others).  I was not familiar with all the tales and especially all the actual details and endings.  I found them fascinating, especially the gruesome bits.  I'd really like to read (or preferably listen to) the rest, as these are a selection from The Complete Grimm's Fairy Tales (though unabridged in the telling of the stories chosen).  I was especially interested in some of the variations ("The Twelve Brothers" and "The Six Swans", for instance).

As for the narration - it definitely lived up to the hype, for which I am exceedingly pleased.

I didn't get a chance to listen to this with the kiddos, and it has holds.  But perhaps I'll check it out again to share with the kiddos.

Comments:

I was reading this series one after the other in a whirl so to some extent they have become blurred together in my mind.  I have to admit I was a bit startled and even somewhat offended by the portrayal of Christianity and Jesus in Hexed.  The portrayal may fit some, but not myself or my beliefs.  The lumping together bothered me.  But moving beyond that I continued to enjoy the series.  Atticus makes some stupid decisions in Hammered.  He seems to become further and further embroiled in a mess as his story makes its way through Tricked.  So I was startled when, in Trapped, time had jumped 12 years.  I realized I had missed something very important and backtracked to the novella Two Ravens and One Crow.  There are short stories that I missed that belong within this timeline, but apparently they aren't as vital to the story.  The novella in question is important though, and you don't want to miss it.  Once I had read it I moved back into Trapped where the consequences of Atticus's decisions and choices become more glaringly obvious.  But there is no choice now but to keep moving.

I have not moved on with the series yet because Hunted was not readily available, but I look forward to reading both it and Shattered.

Hounded

Title: Hounded

Author: Kevin Hearne [Website][Facebook][Twitter]

Publisher: Del Rey Ballantine Books

Series: Iron Druid Chronicles, Bk 1

ISBN: 9780345522474

Length: 289 pages

Obtained: Complimentary copy provided at a signing at a convention

Why this book?:

I took it because it was free, the series sounded interesting from a panel I had heard Kevin Hearne speak at, and I wanted the author's signature.

I read it because I was in the right mood and remembered it sounded interesting from the panel.

Comments:

I enjoyed this book and immediately found (in ebook format), and read, the short story that comes before it, Grimoire of the Lamb, once I'd finished it.

But I'm jumping ahead, so let me backtrack.  Hounded features the Druid currently called Atticus O'Sullivan.  He's lived thousands of years.  He's been pretty much on the run (if you can call it that) with a highly coveted magical sword from an angry Celtic love god. But now he's found a comfortable place and is starting to develop roots.  Which means he is ready to stand his ground and fight.

And all the earth-related phrases I just used were unintentional but surprisingly accurate.  Because as a Druid, Atticus is very connected with the earth and actually draws his power from it.

Anyway, I'm excited to read the 2nd book in the series, Hexed, which has finally came in at the library.  I just needed to write this up first before the series becomes a blur in my head.

Title: Grimoire of the Lamb

Publisher: Del Rey Ballantine Books

Series: Iron Druid Chronicles, Bk 0.5

ISBN: 9780345548290

Length: 76 pages

Obtained: Library ebook copy

Why this book?:

It comes before Hounded and I like to read books as much in order as possible.  Plus it was available that night.

Comments:

This is a story of Druid meets (or meets again) Egyptian mythology.  It was quick, fun, and interesting.

Elemental books

In preparation for my England trip I checked out the max number of eBooks possible on my Kindle (10) to save space in my luggage.  Among those was the first short story and first full length story in this series.  While there I ended up also downloading and reading the second book in the series (also from the library).  I hope to be reading more of the series soon.

"Elemental" (Elemental, Bk 0.5) by Brigid Kemmerer -

An interesting introduction to this YA series.  I liked the characters, Emily and Michael.  The ending is pretty suspenseful, so I moved right on to the next book ASAP.

Storm (Elemental, Bk 1) by Brigid Kemmerer -

The first full length book in the series and I expected it to see more about Michael and Emily.  Instead it features Becca and Chris.  I suddenly didn't like Michael very much, and I certainly didn't like how things turned out from his short story.  But I can't say more without major spoilers.  But Becca and Chris were okay, and you definitely get more of a feel for the world/setting.

Spark (Elemental, Bk 2) by Brigid Kemmerer -

Featuring another brother, Gabriel, and a girl named Layne.  But this book reminded me of the 1999 movie She's All That with Freddie Prince Jr. and Rachel Leigh Cook.  Even the characters names. Layne = Laney and her brother Simon (both book and movie) who live with their father...  Once I got past the similarities, I enjoyed the angsty story.  Especially Gabriel.

Bouncing around genres...

Cake on a Hot Tin Roof (Piece of Cake Mystery, Bk 2) by Jacklyn Brady aka Sherry Lewis and Sammi Carter (library copy) -

I've slowed down on my cozy reading this month, but still enjoyed this dip into New Orleans and Mardi Gras culture.  Rita was crazy busy trying to keep her business going, trying to promote it, plus having a surprise visit from family, and digging into a murder case too... I know I would be overwhelmed in her position.  My only problem with her wasn't as a reader but as a blogger.  What was her problem with writing a blog post?  She acted like it was the most dreadful use of her time.  Anyway, I look forward to Arsenic and Old Cake coming out this November.

The Guardian (Dream-Hunter, Bk ) by Sherrilyn Kenyon (personal copy via paperbackswap.com) -

It's been awhile since I've read a Sherrilyn Kenyon book and I was glad to read a new (to me) one.  I started it pretty much as soon as I got it (I had to finish Cake on a Hot Tin Roof before I could really start it) and finished it soon after.  It wasn't one of my absolute favorites, but I still enjoyed it as I do pretty much all of her dark-hunter, were-hunter, dream-hunter books.

"Thread of Death" (Elemental Assassin, Bk 5.5) by Jennifer Estep (ebook short story - purchased) -

I very grudgingly bought this eBook because I had to.  Why do authors pub stuff in e-book format only?  Not cool.  (It's not so much the price, which was $1.99, as the fact that I'm keeping this series and I need it in PRINT).  Of course I enjoyed the story.  I love Gin Blanco, her "family," and the Elemental Assassin series.  In this particular story, Gin made me nervous with how much she exposed herself, but that's part of the storyline so ::shrug:: I dealt.  All the hints at future stories made me anxious to read more.  Which leads me to...

By a Thread (Elemental Assassin, Bk 6) by Jennifer Estep (personal copy - purchased at Books-A-Million) -

After a read "Thread of Death" I immediately had to read By a Thread.  Gin's exposure is causing problems so she takes a "vacation" where, of course, she runs into more trouble.  Gin, being human and therefore having the usual sorts of flaws had some issues with not necessarily arrogance, but something similar when it comes to her powers in this one.  Some scenes of this book (in part due to fore mentioned flaws) had me so on the edge of my seat that I was reading as fast as I possibly could (it took everything I had not to skim ahead) to get to a more comfortable spot.  Really.  Anyway, I guess that means it was a success.  Some other things regarding Gin's relationships (romantic and familial) that I thought were already wrapped up were double-knotted wrapped up.  I eagerly look forward to the short story (bk 6.5) "Haints and Hobwebs" and (bk 7) Widow's Web which is due out in August.

ghostgirl (Rest in Popularity) (ghostgirl, Bk 1) by Tonya Hurley (library copy) -

I checked the third book in this series out to a patron and found myself drawn by the cover.  You can't tell from the pic, but it has one of those clear plastic cutouts in the center... Anyway, the story was mostly cute and fun.  It kinda reminded me of a YA book version of the Ruby Gloom kids television show, with lessons to learn, etc.  Some of the attitudes about death did make me a little uncomfortable.  My sister's best friend died at 16 (she was hit by a train), so I kept thinking about how my sister would react to some of the offhand remarks.  And the ending was a bit abrupt.  But I will try the second book in the series, ghostgirl Homecoming, and see where the story goes.

Here we go, now... Here, here, here we go...

Sorry about the title.  I have a stupid boy band song stuck in my head.  Anyway... on to what I've been reading...

Reckoning by Lili St. Crow (personal copy via J. Kaye - thanks!)

Going into this I knew that J. Kaye felt this was the best of the series, but questions aren't answered, and a reviewer on pbs said it was their least favorite, but too many loose ends.  Complete opposite opinions but on one thing everyone agreed.  Now for my take... It's neither my favorite nor my least favorite.  I enjoyed it just as I've enjoyed them all.  I can guess about some of the loose ends.  Because this is a YA series and you don't have all the answers when you're a YA.
Since I'm so motivated by characters, though, lets discuss them... I wanted Dru to treat Ash better.  To view him as more than a puppy or toddler, but a friend.  I was dissapointed in how that aspect worked.  I just can't decide on Christophe.  I never loved him, and I don't think I ever will, but I came the closest to being okay with him in this book.  I stopped loving Graves after the first book, but the insight to him in this one helped me remember why I had.  Even if the changes in him make me think I never could love him again.  I don't know what to say about Dru herself.

Artistic License by Julie Hyzy (ebook free through Sony Reader Store)
I own several of Julie Hyzy's backlist, but this is the first I've actually read.  I enjoyed it.  I mostly liked Annie, minus some stupid moments w/ her ex. ... I didn't like her ex at all.  Overall, I liked the story.  It's categorized as a mystery, and I don't know how accurate I'd say that is, but still...

"Clever is as Clever Does" by Linsey Lanier (ebook short story free through Sony Reader Store - still currently free in multiple e-formats - I've linked to Smashwords)

The second of the Clever Detective shorts.  It was fun just like the first.  I really want to read the third "Cleverest of Them All" but unlike the first two, it's not free.  So it's only $0.99... I have not paid for a single e-book yet.  I might have to break down and make this my first.  Very frustrating.  But that tells you something about how fun they are, right?  Try the first one.  And try reading it out loud in a dramatic fashion.  Seriously.  Maybe you'll be as hooked as me.

Heaven is for Heroes by P J Sharon (ebook free through the Trick or Treat event this past Halloween)

Overall, I liked this story.  It's a young adult book, and it can be difficult to remember that when the characters are going off to war, being killed and/or injured, etc.  Then you think about how soldiers really do go overseas and fight that young and you get chills.  Anyway, it's a very emotionally driven story.

I've been trying to work on The Roman Hat Mystery (Ellery Queen) for the Vintage Mystery Challenge but it's slow going, even though I like it so far.

Traipsing through my readings... (Can you tell I'm running out of titles?)

Flipped Out (Do-It-Yourself Mystery, Bk 5) by Jennie Bentley (library copy) - This was another enjoyable DIY book despite Derek sometimes being dense to the point of annoying.  I'm looking forward to whatever comes next in the series.

Handbags and Homicide (Haley Randolph Mystery, Bk 1) by Dorothy Howell (library copy) - I was really worried about this book.  I didn't think I'd be able to connect with Haley and her shallowness.  Somehow, though, I not only liked her (and she certainly can be shallow - not to mention LAZY and a bit arrogant), I couldn't wait to read the next installment.

Purses and Poison (Haley Randolph Mystery, Bk 2) by Dorothy Howell (library copy) - I was eager to read more of Haley's story.  At times in this one I thought she was delusional about her "somewhat' boyfriend.  And as for the mystery, she should have been more forthright from the beginning (of course, then the story wouldn't have been what it was).  I look forward to more.  I should be getting the 3rd book, Shoulder Bags and Shootings, as soon as it's returned and I already have book 4, Clutches and Curses, checked out and waiting.

Lost and Fondue (Cheese Shop Mystery, Bk 2) by Avery Aames (library copy) - I liked this one better than the first in the series.  I have absolutely no interest in the cheese part of these, but I am interested in what will happen next with the characters.

Cat Sitter Among the Pigeons (Dixie Hemingway Mystery, Bk 6) by Blaize Clement (library copy) - I like this series, but Blaize Clement always had to include something to irritate me.  This time it was Dixie's dreamworld in which everyone drank water with birth control chemicals until she approved of them and gave the antidote.  Grrr.  Otherwise, it was an enjoyable book with a decent amount of suspense.

Thanksgiving by Janet Evanovich (personal copy) - This was the first romance I've read by Janet Evanovich.  It was a quick, light read.  I liked the main characters.  Some of the smaller characters made an appearance then were shoved off until needed later.  And the ending was somewhat abrupt, but okay.  Overall, I enjoyed it.

"The Clever Detective" by Linsey Lanier (free e-book short story through Sony ReaderStore [also available through Smashwords]) - Very cute, very fun.  I'm definitely going to have to read more by Linsey Lanier.

Tempest in the Tea Leaves (Fortune Teller Mystery, Bk 1) by Kari Lee Townsend (library copy) - I was cautious going in this because books with psychic protagonists can be preachy, and I don't care to be pushed when I'm trying to enjoy a book.  Fortunately, that wasn't a problem with this book.  Sunny could be a bit air-headed (blurting out details in front of people she's trying to get information from and giggling way too much), but she was still likable.  I didn't like the lead detective as much, but he wasn't bad.  Sunny's parents were annoying, but took huge breaks between scenes, so tolerable.  In fact, my only real complaint would be the nickname Detective Mitch Stone gives Sunny - Tink.  Tink is what Derek calls Avery in the DIY cozy mystery series.  I would have preferred a more original nickname be used for Sunny (if any).

Since last we spoke...

I've picked up the pace on my reading.  It'll have to hold me over for the next week, because work's going to take over, what with co-workers requesting off for the Halloween weekend.  I've read...

Pale Demon  (The Hollows, Bk 9) by Kim Harrison (library copy) - Another enjoyable book about Rachel Morgan.  I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series, A Perfect Blood.

Moving is Murder  (Mom Zone Mystery, Bk 1) by Sara Rosett  (library copy) - An enjoyable cozy.  I'll be moving on with this series as soon as I catch up with some other library books I have out.

A Taste of Nightlife (Vampire Chef Mystery, Bk 1) by Sarah Zettel (purchased at Borders closing sale) - I really liked this vampire cozy, and I'm looking forward to reading the next, Let Them Eat Stake.

English Tea Murder (Lucy Stone Mystery, Bk 17) by Leslie Meier (library copy) - The writing was fine, but I didn't like the ending.  I got it, just didn't like it.  I can't say more without major spoilers.

The Homing Instinct (Harlequin Silhouette Romance, No 747) by Dixie Browning (personal copy - used from ???) - A nice quick read.  This is why I like Harlequin/Silhouette.

Butterface (Short Story - scroll down a little for the desc.) by Gwen Hayes (ebook given by author through Trick or Treat event [10/24/11 - 10/31/11]) - I was intrigued the moment I read the description, and I read it as soon as I downloaded it.  I had no idea what a butterface is. =/  I liked it, and I'm glad I had the chance to read it.  The ending was a bit abrupt, but it was a short story so that's pretty typical.

Nine Lives Last Forever (Cats and Curios Mystery, Bk 2) by Rebecca M. Hale (personal copy - from paperbackswap.com) - This series is driving me nuts.  I bought the 3rd one new (Border's closing sale), and I'm supposed to mail it off for a swap.  I'd like to read it first.  But BOTH the 1st book and this one were hard for me to get into.  It's not really a someone is murdered, let's figure out who did it kind of mystery.  That's part of the problem.  It's in multiple viewpoints.  That's another.  And there is so much description and detail about San Fransisco history that I don't care to go into such depth about... There's a third.  I was tempted not to finish, but it managed to pick up (finally) 2/3s in.  We'll have to see if I manage the 3rd.  It has to be mailed by Nov. 2.

"Familiar"

Title: "Familiar" from Kiss Me Deadly: 13 Tales of Paranormal Love

Author: Michelle Rowen

Publisher: RP Teens

Copyright Date: 2010

Print Date: July 2010

ISBN: 9780762439492

Pages: 32

Book Description (from back cover):

'Til Death Do Us Part...

First crushes and last rites; dark spells and bright magic; forbidden lovers and enchanted beings—and always , always hungry games of desire. Puckers up for a darkly sweet collection of ghosts, shape shifters, fairies, unicorns, vampires, and demons in tales from today's biggest writers of the paranormal persuasion.
Comments:

I actually made up a post-it note for this so I'd remember.  What follows are my notes (parenthetical notes are my current interpretations of what I had joted down)...

Cute. Short, obviously. Not a lot of depth possible. As much as possible crammed in. (Referring to depth.) Leaves a lot to the imagination. (I'm pretty sure I meant this in a positive way.) Good Characters. Quick ending. (Apparently I wasn't in the mood for complete sentences.)

Anyway, I had intended to read all the short stories then write a line or two about each one, hence the post-it note. As that isn't going to happen, I thought I'd share my thoughts on what I did read.

Angel with Attitude by Michelle Rowen

walking in circles before lying down by Merrill Markoe

From Dead to Worse

Appetite for Murder (Short Story found in Unusual Suspects: Stories of Mystery and Fantasy)

Currently Reading:

Twin of Ice by Jude Deveraux (I'll finish this before I go to bed)

I expect to recieve the most recent Jayne Castle book soon, so I'll read the books in that series to prepare...

Bridal Jitters (Short Story - My copy is found in Harmony)
After Dark
After Glow
Ghost Hunter
Silver Master

I can't really plan further ahead because I don't know how much time classes will take this semester.
