I've been obsessively reading to "escape", primarily romance with the <g class="gr_ gr_144 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling multiReplace" data-gr-id="144" id="144">occassional</g> fantasy, children's/MG, manga, and cozy <g class="gr_ gr_201 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling multiReplace" data-gr-id="201" id="201">tossed in</g>.

I'm hoping to do a better job of recording my reading. I've been posting on Goodreads for most of it, but don't post reviews. I figured this way I can at least record any thoughts or reflections I have on what I'm reading... if I follow through.

This is a simple post of intention, so what reality actually looks like is to be seen. But it is a new day, with the potential for fresh starts.

Johttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15574327321984659993noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3705639508539398220.post-20100859016024181332021-11-23T01:45:00.002-06:002021-11-23T01:52:17.368-06:00It's Monday! I've discussed mental health and the mental health system before... On October 2, my father took his life. He had been sent to 2 different hospitals 3 times over the weeks preceding, and each time was sent back without being put on any sort of suicide hold. The last time he was sent back within a couple hours, and a few days later he was gone. I've been grieving and dealing with anger and frustration and numbness and sorrow and pain and all the other emotions that come from this sort of sudden loss.

I am currently under quarantine as my family has been out with the big bad. Hopefully I test negative (again) so I can participate in a 5K this Thanksgiving as well as Small Business Saturday.

Anyway, The emotional overload and severe loss of focus has deeply impacted my reading. I am slowly getting back to reading, primarily by focusing on graphic novels or genre fiction by auto-read authors.

Recently Read (October/November):

The Girl From The Other Side: Siúil A Rún, Vol. 11 (The final volume in the series. I enjoyed this look into the different heritage people around us could have, as well as the many ways heritage can be expressed, whether that is food, sports, traditions, or stories.

The book ends with a project (well, technically it ends with a glossary, but still...) for children to explore their own heritage. I was especially pleased that it includes speaking with others and asking for their stories. I feel that is so important, and we all should do it while we can (if we can).

For the technical stuff... this is a fictionalized non-fiction book - if that is a thing. The overall book is teaching real information about various cultures etc., but through fictional characters. I already mentioned the glossary; it includes words that are used throughout the book. And the author speaks directly to the audience throughout the book with notes, explanations, pronunciations, and even questions ("Does anyone in your family prepare special dishes that you love to eat?").

This is apparently part of a series called "Exploring Our Community", and I'm be interested in reading more.

Johttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15574327321984659993noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3705639508539398220.post-41886068360991093412021-07-02T13:51:00.006-05:002021-07-06T00:37:40.102-05:0015th Annual Canadian Reading Challenge
I am participating in the 15th Annual Canadian Reading Challenge this year (July 1, 2021 - June 30, 2022). Hosted by Canadian Bookworm, the goal is to read AND review at least 13 (for the 13 provinces) Canadian books during the year. I typically define Canadian books as being by Canadian authors. I translated (with Google's help) some of the Goodreads reviews from French, and as suspected, Autistic adults had difficulties with the way the author allegedly raised his son. Part of the problem is that this is only semi-autobiographical, and one can't really know what is real and what isn't. Some of the father character's thoughts sound inspirational or meaningful, but sometimes - well - he sounds like he wants to "cure" or "fix" autism (at least in his son), which is highly controversial.

The Leak: For the Love of Truth by Kate Reed Petty; Illustrated by Andrea Bell - MG aspiring journalist in search of a story discovers potential water contamination - similar to Flint, Michigan.
Hosted by: Book Date

Life:

I'm going to try being better about the blogging thing. I last did one of these Monday posts a year ago though, so we'll see. Life has been chaotic. Summer reading has started at work, and we are moving out of the pandemic era (although we aren't there yet). It is now time for me to adjust to this new management position during "normal" times.

What else? My father's a mess (see my post from March if you're wondering, but warning it is long one and probably full of triggers). My mother just had a medical procedure this past week. We recently refinanced the house; I now have my first ever mortgage - in my late 30s. I'm trying to live a healthier lifestyle and might soon be going back to the gym for the first time in 1.5 yrs. I haven't turned in a single assignment on time yet this semester of grad school. I think I intended to add cover images, and that is why it has been sitting in draft for over a year. I've decided to just post it as is.

The Slug by Elise Gravel is part of the "Disgusting Critters" series. It's a kids book published by tundra. Cute with little factoids told in a lighthearted way. It has a nice mix of fonts and font sizes, and goes back and forth between a dark brown and a faded red/pinkish text color on a pale green (with brown tones) background.

The Toad by Elisa Gravel is also part of the "Disgusting Critters" series. Like The Slug, the pages are a pale green with brown tones. The font is dark brown and hot pink. Toads seem pretty fascinating, and the book is pretty quick, so this book may require further reading after. This book focuses on the common toad in particular, but mentions a Suriname toad whose babies come out of her back? ... cray-cray. The book also mentions the environmental impact on toads and their benefits in our environments, which is an important message these days.

Yet another entry of the “Disgusting Critters”series by Elisa Gravel, The Spider has a variety of factoids about spiders - they are NOT insects - including that some spiders can spin their silk to hold air for breathing under water. The text and illustrations has some additional colors with pink, red, and a yellow-green.

Elise Gravel is from Montreal, making these Canadian Book Challenge books.
I will be detouring from that theme today because I am just so frustrated.
The title of the blog is Books to the Rescue. Books have always been an escape for me. Unfortunately, books cannot cure all.

They certainly are not curing the atrocity that is the U.S. Mental Health Care System. I've mentioned before that my father is mentally ill. About 2 years ago, give or take, it was clear my dad could no longer reside at home. He was taken to a mental health facility in a major urban city. It wasn't peaceful, and he had to worry about theft, but there were worse factors. The facility had medicine shortages. So instead of giving everyone their full prescribed doses, they would cut the amount given in order to spread the medicine out among all the residents. My father fell and broke toe bones twice, and exhibited "transitory dementia". When he was taken to the hospital, it was discovered that his ammonia levels were outrageously off. They managed to get those leveled out at the hospital, but it became clear this facility was not the place for him.

He was moved to a nursing home that the doctor from the hospital worked with. It seemed all was well. My father did not fit the nursing home's demographic, and they didn't understand why he was there; however, he was being cared for and was safe. The doctor that had brought him there retired and that was tricky but we were managing. Then Covid hit, and he couldn't leave. He decided this was a prison and began spiraling out of control mentally. He became certain the director of the nursing facility was lying to him and other facilities so he couldn't get out of there.

He was transferred to a different facility - another mental health one. The place was riddled with bed bugs. He moved to four different rooms in less than a week and was eaten up. His caseworker said he wasn't (mentally) at the level of the other patients and did not belong there. We couldn't get him out fast enough, so he moved into a room with a sibling that lives next door. He abused his medication horribly and had lost all health insurance in the transfer.

Within two weeks he agreed to go back to the nursing home (and they agreed to take him). Unfortunately, the damage was done. His mental state was becoming worse by the day. He began accusing the director (and other staff) of stealing his art work and auctioning it off for hundreds of thousands of dollars. He thought they were sneaking into our home and stealing (or taking pictures of to use) the artwork that remains here. He was hearing staff in the hall "talk about him", hearing the director and other staff when they weren't even there. He believed he was forming relationships with various staff and they planned to take him home to rent a room from them - or worse yet, that they might reciprocate with romantic feelings. It didn't matter that this is all illogical, because you can't reason with such irrational delusions. The nursing home staff, who had never seen this side of him (he's typically very good at keeping these mental breaks just to family), are scared to go around him and be accused of the horrible things he is saying to and about them. I don't blame them. They are used to elderly patients who might have dementia or Alzheimer's, but nothing like this.

But we can't find a single long-term care facility that is within a reasonable distance, is clean and will care for him, and will treat his mental health issues appropriately. The case worker at the nursing home is looking, but with a basic search it does not look like the places she is finding are truly equipped to handle him. We are searching as well but without much luck. He can't stay there, he cannot come back here, but there is no place with decent mental health care? Or they are so far and few between that you have to hit the jackpot of luck to be near one? (And that isn't even considering what the quality facilities probably COST. We are a low income family.)

In the meantime, my father has begun making accusations about my mother, swearing at me, telling me he wants a new family. And at the same time, my family has a LOT of other things/issues/situations going on. This is just one of them. So I don't mean to whine. And I do hope to begin blogging again if I can get some semblance of organization and calm in my life.

But at least I managed to get this all out into the universe. Here's hoping for some change or improvement in the future. Here's hoping some enterprising soul will find the ideal solution, and be willing to fight for it. I'll read about them in a book, and admire them for their constitution, resilience, fight, dedication, compassion, and most importantly, for doing what I cannot.

Johttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15574327321984659993noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3705639508539398220.post-58767275189742034002020-06-08T13:16:00.003-05:002020-06-08T13:17:23.237-05:00It's Monday! The next on isn't due for another week, although I need to start my research and observations ASAP.

I had started a garden in May. I was excited at first, but this is my first time venturing beyond houseplants, and I don't think it is for me. I planted half the garden late when the plants had started withering and discoloring (I tried to pay the kids $1/4 plants, but they didn't get them deep enough and gave up pretty quickly). I haven't watered them yet (although it has rained quite a bit), I think I planted them too close together, and they are mixed so I don't know which plants are which. However, I've had beautiful (if small) red strawberries. Taste tests have shown them to be decent to thumbs up. I'm horrible at distance education in any case (because I'm a horrible procrastinator), but it's been especially bad lately (beyond the back at work mostly, but still some at home balance, my dad and oldest nephew both had bad mental health weeks). Anyway, I was mentally exhausted and submitted my first graded assignment several days late. Which means I've been all the more exhausted. It turned out okay (I was afraid the instructor wouldn't accept it because she had already graded, but thankfully she did accept it.) Assignment two is due tomorrow, but unstarted. 2020 has been strange, sometimes unbelievable, sometimes trying for so many (if not most or all), and we are only rounding out of in Month 5. I haven’t posted anything yet this year. I had goals and ideas for what this blog would be for me this year and not one has panned out. (Actually, the last Monday post I made was me talking about blogging better.)

When I started the year 2020, I decided my only “resolution“ was that I would cut back on my library loans, so I could get to more of the books on my shelves. Then COVID-19 happened, and I checked out a huge stack of books and borrowed even more digitally, thinking I was going to get so much reading done. That did not happen.

Now I take a break and sit my home library, and I see I need to cut down on at least 200 books to make my shelves less cluttered and more in line with my visions.

I’m not sure how, or if, I can manage this time. I’ve thinned my collection of books massively in the past 10 years (see Book Hoarding and check out the book hoarding tag to see some of this journey). I feel especially overwhelmed during everything else that life has thrown toward me. However, if I’m going to manage, I believe the best tool may be this blog. I used to do a regular post called “Cozy Cull”, and perhaps I can reboot something like that. At the least, maybe recording my reading more regularly might prompt me to read more frequently, as I used to do.

Which brings me to...*Note: This isn’t everything, but we’ll leave it at this for now. The goal is to have NO double stacked books, including paperbacks, and have some space for decorations and slow growth aka new books coming in...
I just finished a library book, The Bookwanderers (Pages & Co., Bk 1) by Anna James (Pages & Co., Bk 1). I have a number of partially started library books (mostly audio, some ebooks) that just keep getting put back on hold and checked out and returned over an over again as well. These are titles that I've been working on over an extended period, some for years now. I also have that stack mentioned previously, but I'm thinking I might just return those unread (else, I might never make it to my own books).

Also, what are you reading? It’s okay to be an enabler.Johttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15574327321984659993noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3705639508539398220.post-35372974620274518632019-12-23T18:41:00.002-06:002019-12-23T18:41:26.085-06:00It's Monday!
This has been a long year. I sometimes feel like each year is longer than the next. My blogging suffers as a result. I have at least one book that I wrote about (physically - on paper) back when I read I that I should be posting for the Canadian Book Challenge. Otherwise, I hope to do better in the coming year.

I'm considering joining more challenges in hopes of encouraging me to come back to my love of reading and re-involve myself more in the world of books. Don't get me wrong, I get and skim through MANY publisher and author emails, and I work in a library. But I just don't read like I used to, and it makes me sad.

Anyway, if anyone follows me on Goodreads (Jo Book), I'm keeping that most consistently up-to-date. I very rarely review anything, but at least I mark everything I finish.

So far this month I've been reading some Rebecca Raisin books, some of the Giant Days graphic novel series (for a discussion group), and catching up on some of Jennifer Estep's Elemental Assassin books.

Oh, and I have We Are the Weather: Saving the Planet Begins At Breakfast by Jonathan Safran Foer in my car (on audio disc), but now that the author has gotten to his main point/argument, I'm dragging my feet about finishing the book. Environmentalism/conservation/etc. is exhausting.

I have so many books to catch up on, and the holidays are busy, so I can't say what I'll be reading next.

That being said, Happy Holidays! and Happy Reading! to you.

Book 7 in the Flavia de Luce books, As Chimney Sweepers Come to Dust has Flavia attending a boarding school in Canada. This is the first of the books to be set in Canada despite Alan Bradley being a Canadian author. (Alan Bradley is originally from Ontario, although he has lived in Malta - Gozo - and apparently currently lives on the Isle of Man.) I wasn't sure how the change in location would influence the story. What happened is Flavia spent less time solving the crime in a lab (which she has scarce access to) and more time trying to navigate (both location, people, and social structure) while nosing out information to solve the murder.

Jayne Entwistle did her usual excellent job of narration. Flavia spoke less, and except for rare glimpses of other characters like Dogger and Mrs. Mullet, most voices are Canadian. This seems obvious (duh, the book is set in Canada), but it was most apparent when the long loved characters had their brief voiced moments. Just as Flavia was homesick, I missed them too.

I enjoyed the story overall, but I'm looking forward to the change the next book will bring. I won't say more, lest there be spoilers.Johttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15574327321984659993noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3705639508539398220.post-32291337847109386502019-08-25T21:14:00.000-05:002019-08-25T22:48:29.492-05:00It's Monday! In life:

I didn't have anything exciting or interesting happen during the week itself. However, Friday I spent 5 hours hiking with friends (we may have gotten a tad lost on the trails), and Saturday I went with my sister and BIL to Wizard World Comic Con for my first time. Both events were fun, but there was a LOT of walking involved. Probably something I should be doing more often. 😊

My nephew (the one with autism) has been struggling lately. He's been running (which is scary) and is on an emotional see-saw. This became an issue while we were at the comic con and my mother had the kids. Hopefully things will level out soon.

This week, I finished:

Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann (Read by Ann Marie Lee, Will Patton, and Danny Campbell. This was a book discussion selection. Very sad, very interesting. In audio, it was a bit dry at first, but picks up as you go. That may be partially as it was very descriptive setting the background, and I'm not really one for much description.)

Super Team by Bill Willingham et al. (Part of the Fables series. The Fables are all in Haven, and will - maybe - be taking on Super Hero identities to fight the Dark Man.)

Bye-Bye, Black Sheep by Ayelet Waldman (Book 7 - and final - in the Mommy-Track Mystery series. I really loved this series when I read the bulk of the books many years ago. I had this one sitting on my shelves - obtained through PaperBackSwap.com - for many years, but never seemed to get to it. I did enjoy it, but I think I would enjoyed it more without the huge gap in time between readings. This author moved out of the cozy mystery genre after this book - she wrote a couple women's fiction, a historical fiction, and a couple nonfiction books - and I just never moved with her.)

Eye Spy by Mercedes Lackey (Valdemar: Family Spies, Bk
2... This wasn't my favorite Mercedes Lackey or Valdemar book. It was
kind of like multiple short stories in one, and did not have nearly the
emotional impact and connection that I look for. It was still a quick
read, though and I will continue with the series.)

Sparkle Witch by Helen Harper (A novella following books 1-3 of the Lazy Girl's Guide to Magic series. I purchased this ebook.)

As Chimney Sweepers Come to Dust by Alan Bradley (Read by Jayne Entwistle; Book 7 of the Flavia de Luce series)

The Orchid Thief: A True Story of Beauty and Obsession by Susan Orlean (This should have been on my "started but indefinite
hold list", but I'm hoping to actually get back into it and maybe finish
it this week. I started it some time ago for a book discussion, but after the discussion happened, I never finished the book.)

Started but on indefinite hold:

I have three audiobooks that I started over the past 1 1/2 years but haven't finished. Two of them were digital (a problematic format for me to do audio) and one of them is a hunkster:

Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking, Code Girls: The Untold Story of the American Women Code Breakers of World War II, and Moby Dick.

I'll get to these eventually, but I can't say when.

Upcoming:

More Fables Books (I should be starting the Fairest spin-off next)

I still really need to read Penne Dreadful by Catherine Bruns (an ebook I got through NetGalley AGES ago).

I have a personal library full of books that I haven't read yet, an extensive list of library books that I'm behind on, and I've been growing my Kindle library with freebie ebooks. I'd be doing well to read any of these...

Ah, life. I haven't participated in this since last October, and so much has happened, some bad, some good.

My father is in a nursing home now.

We lost my 23-yo cousin to suicide at the end of July. He had the same mental diagnosis as my father (who has made multiple attempts, but so far has only managed to compromise his health).

And we've lost one dog and a bearded dragon.

But a new beast - er, puppy - joined the family. (She's a toy poodle, but she's LOUD and FEISTY.)

I started a new position (with the same library) in March (It is technically a promotion, but doesn't feel that way, just different.)

I took an online grad school biology class this summer. I haven't taken any courses in 10 years, and I've never done so while working full time. But I survived and even managed an A!

Also, I finally (FINALLY!) got the helicopter ride that I won last summer. It was awesome. We flew over my hometown and I loved it.

My work has occasional health challenges, and for the current challenge, we had to not watch TV for two days. I had no idea how difficult that would be! I very rarely watched TV as a child, even when my siblings did. But I used this as an opportunity to re-discover my love of reading and got in 2.5 books during those two days.

This past few weeks, I've finished:

Star Witch and Spirit Witch by Helen Harper (These are books 2 & 3 in the Lazy Girl's Guide to Magic. I borrowed both of these through InterLibrary Loan at the Library. I just saw that there is a novella following; I went ahead and purchased it on Amazon, which I rarely do.)

Where It Hurts by Reed Farrel Coleman (The first Gus Murphy book, I started reading this for a book discussion in June and only just recently finished it. I'm not opposed to following up with book 2, but don't know when that is likely to happen.)

Werewolves of the Heartland by Bill Willingham et al. (Part of the Fables series, with a ridiculous amount of nudity - especially this issue - but a world and story line(s) I've been enjoying.)

The Long Way Home by Louise Penny (Read by Ralph Cosham; Book 10 in the Chief Inspector Gamache series) - My post for this can be found at: https://ponderingthelibrary.blogspot.com/2019/08/the-long-way-home.html

Upcoming:

More Fables Books

and the Sparkle Witch eNovella I just bought,.

I really need to read Penne Dreadful by Catherine Bruns (an ebook I got through NetGalley AGES ago), and

I just received the Eye Spy by Mercedes Lackey from the library.

Oh, and I should be starting As Chimney Sweepers Come to Dust by Alan Bradley in audio shortly.

I did not quite make the 13 books last challenge (I have no excuse... er, I have many excuses, but no good ones). Anyway, I have from July 1, 2019 - June 30, 2020 to read 13+ Canadian books AND review them. Usually, there are some mini-challenges along the way as well (I especially haven't been good at that portion). If you are interested in signing up, visit here. This year's challenge is being hosted by Canadian Bookworm.
It was time for me to revisit Gamache and the people of Three Pines. I had halted in part because the storyline had become so difficult to process emotionally (a sign of good writing, I suppose), and in part when I learned that the narrator Ralph Cosham had passed.

But it was time to move on, and time to listen to the last of the Gamache books that Cosham did narrate, The Long Way Home (Chief Inspector Gamache, Bk 10).

This story is all about where Clara's husband Peter has gone to, and along the way, how everyone is living within their new positions and life roles after great turmoil, upheaval, and change of the past several books - Gamache, Beauvoir, and the several of the residents of Three Pines have adjustments to work through. Which brings us back to Peter. Clara and Peter had a trial separation of 1 year, and Peter was supposed to return to figure out where they go for now. But he hasn't, and something must be wrong - but what?

There is a lot of symbolism in this story - in the title, the book cover, and the "clues" Peter has left behind.

I do really enjoy this series. During this particular book, I laughed throughout and cried once (I cannot say more without spoilers). I will miss Ralph Cosham, but he did a beautiful job with this last book (and all those proceeding it).

Going forward, I will be quicker to listen to The Nature of the Beast (Chief Inspector Gamache, Bk 11) and the other books in the series. I hope narrator Robert Bathurst is a good fit (Louise Penny says he is), and I look forward to my next visit with Gamache and the residents of Three Pines.Johttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15574327321984659993noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3705639508539398220.post-48032399823535452652019-05-27T13:35:00.003-05:002019-05-27T13:36:23.923-05:00City of Secrets

Comments:

I wanted to read this from the time I finished the first book in the series, City of Lies. During the year I waited, I binged on Victoria Thompson's Gaslight Mystery series. More recently, I've been on something of a reading slump. I would read some, and even enjoy what I was reading, but I haven't had the same passion that I had in days gone by. Yesterday (11/23/2018), I had gone Black Friday shopping and was home alone with the dogs, and I thought, "I should read that book that I've been waiting so long for and finally have checked out." So I did. I read straight through it, with only small pauses to nap (I was exhausted), let the dogs out, catch the dogs when they unlatched the gate and escaped the yard, take pictures of the dogs, or break up occasional dog-spats (those dogs are more than a handful). Finally.

The story jumps right in from the start. Too bad I didn't remember the first book quite as well as I would have liked, but I picked up fairly quickly. I think I needed the quick pacing of this story...

I wrote the above in November 2018 and never finished or published, so here it is...Since I didn't finish my thoughts, and don't remember what I intended to say now, we'll just say I'm a fan.

I read E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and The X Files: Earth Children are Weird (illustrated by Kim Smith) in March, and never got around to finishing my post...

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is very much like the movie in book form, and even more so because the primary characters are already children. On the other hand, The X Files: Earth Children are Weird is more of its own story.

I've always been more of an X Files fan than an E.T. fan, but beyond that, I enjoyed the X Files book more. Fox and Dana are children and friends, exploring the outdoors and having extraterrestrial experiences before going home. The book was fun.

As for the E.T. book, if you liked the movie, you are likely to enjoy the book with its charming illustrations. And of course, you can always root for E.T. making his way home.

Both of these qualify for the Canadian Book Challenge as Kim Smith is from Alberta.
The Elephant Keeper: Caring for Orphaned Elephants in Zambia by Margriet Ruurs and illustrated by Redro Covo

Margriet Ruurs is a Canadian author (British Columbia), qualifying this read for the 12th annual Canadian Book Challenge.

I have a fondness for books about conservation and animal rescue, and this book is a double whammy. Aaron helps with the rescue and care of a young orphaned elephant. In the process he discovers a passion for helping these beautiful animals that are not the terrifying and horrible beasts he grew up hearing about.

The story is moving with some lovely illustrations. In a couple places the book breaks to interject some facts and figures about elephants. The content was interesting and important, but my involvement in the story was broken up in the process of reading these details. I can see where it might be useful to help connect with the real deal, but I feel it might have done more harm than good. Personally, I ended up skipping over these parts to finish the story and easily could have not missed them altogether. I feel they might have been better at the end of the book, when, having finished tehstory, a reader would want to learn more.

In the end you learn that Aaron is a real person who really is one of the elephant keepers at the Lilayi Elephant Nursery. Overall, I enjoyed and appreciated the book and story. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I also can't wait to read book 1, Keara's Raven: Escape which is available in print as of today. I read Mindy Klasky's Girl's Guide to Witchcraft many years ago and really enjoyed it. Plus, I love fantasy and MG books. So the combination makes for much anticipation.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Keara is running for her life. On her twelfth birthday,
she was supposed to sacrifice her magical darkbeast raven on a holy
altar. Instead, she rebelled and spared Caw's life.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
Now, Keara and Caw travel the Great Road with two other rebels. They
flee terrifying Inquisitor priests while they search for the
Darkers—other people who’ve saved their beloved darkbeasts.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
Winter winds blow hard. Keara and her companions, near-frozen and close
to starvation, discover an underground community of strangers. They
offer food and shelter, and darkbeasts are welcome.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
But are these folk truly the Darkers? Or will they betray Keara and Caw to the authorities who want to enslave them—or worse?

Title: Anna at the Art Museum

Author: Hazel Hutchins & Gail Herbert; Illustrated by Lil Crump

Publisher: Annick Press

A quick book about Anna as she explores an art museum by pushing boundaries. She touches what she ought not touch, she is noisy when she ought to be quiet, and she thinks a roped-off sculpture looks like a great place to climb.

Anna is bored, and every time she tries to find some entertainment she is shushed, scolded, and held back. But with a little kindness shown and a backside look at some of the inner workings, Anna finds an appreciation for art and its beauty that she never held before.

The end includes a listing of all the real art pieces Anna encounters along with where they are currently held. The majority can be found at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, but there are others.

After completing the book I realized that it qualifies for the Canadian Book Challenge. Hazel Hutchins is from Alberta, Gail Herbert is from Ontario, and illustrator Lil Crump is from Nova Scotia. Dr. Jo: How Sara Josephine Baker Saved the Lives of America's Children by Canadian author Monica Kulling and illustrated by Julianna Swaney is the story of a woman who persevered in spite of what would be expected of her for the better of others.

Dr. Jo lost her brother and father to disease and determined to help others fight a similar fate. She may have had some false starts, but eventually she made changes that improved the lives of children, particularly poor children, throughout New York City and America.

I was drawn to this book in part because of Dr. Jo's name and in part because I find inspirational biographical children's books a joy to read. I did not realize that it has a Canadian author and qualifies for the challenge!

Other biographical picture books that may be of interest are: Pop! The Invention of Bubble Gum (I read this a few years back with the kiddos, and they LOVED it), Shark Lady: The True Story of How Eugenia Clark Became the Ocean’s Most Fearless Scientist, and Joan Proctor, Dragon Doctor: The Woman Who Loved Reptiles (I read these last two with the youngest and he enjoyed them).Johttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15574327321984659993noreply@blogger.com0
