Children's books about books and libraries....

Title: No Pirates Allowed! Said Library Lou

Author: Rhonda Gowler Greene; Illustrated by Brian Ajhar

Publisher: Sleeping Bear Press

ISBN: 9781585367962

Obtained: Library copy

Why this book?:

Pirates? Library?  What other reason do I need?

Comments:

This was cute and funny.  I especially found Library Lou's instructions to take a bath and put on clean underwear amusing.  Of course the overall theme - books are treasure - was nice.  And the emphasis put on the non-fiction was cool.  But I also appreciated the pirate vocab.  Which matched quite well with the vocab introduced in the Pirate course offered through one of the local library's databases, Mango Languages.  Words and phrases like "Blow me down," "shiver me timbers," and "swashbuckling."

Title: Never Let a Ghost Borrow Your Library Book: Book Care Guidelines from the Library Secret Service

Author: Karen Casale (Facebook - for book more than author); Illustrated by Cecilia Rebora (Blog)

Publisher: Upstart Books

ISBN: 9781602130616

Obtained: Library copy

Why this book?

Library books and ghosts... I couldn't resist when I saw it on Wowbrary.
Comments:

This is a good book for discussion about taking care of library books (and books in general), and it is cute.  But it wasn't quite as cute and fun as I had hoped for when I first saw it.  I did find out an interesting tidbit though.  Apparently, as a librarian I am in the Library Secret Service!  Who knew?

Title: A Book Is Just Like You!: All About the Parts of a Book

Author: Kathleen Fox (JacketFlap); Illustrated by John Wallace

Publisher: Upstart Books

ISBN: 9781602130609

Obtained: Library copy

Why this book?:

Um... its about books.  And I saw it on Wowbrary.

Comments:

Did you know the parts of a book are like you?  Books have names (titles), family (author, illustrator, editor, designer, publisher), etc.  This was cute and informative.  I know my nephew was learning about the parts of a book (basics - front, back, title page) in preschool, so I imagine this would be great for a step up on that.  Apparently Kathleen Fox also co-wrote a book with Lisa Downey titled The Pirates of Plagiarism that I would be interested in seeing.

Title: That Book Woman

Author: Heather Henson; Illustrated by David Small

Publisher: Atheneum Books for Young Readers

ISBN: 9781416908128

Obtained: Library copy

Why this book?:

I saw it on one of Earl @ The Chronicles Of A Children's Book Writer's IMWAYR posts.  I followed the link to his review on his other blog, Library Hopping in PDX.  Had to try it.

Comments:

The whole idea that this is based on how things really were is fascinating.  I really wish I could remember more from my library history class.  But beyond that, as interesting as the story is, the illustrations just made this book.  The words came alive as you watched Cal's expressions change.  Overall, a very inspiring read that gives me warm feelings just thinking about it.

I saw in the books listed with the author's note a book titled, Down Cut Shin Creek: The Pack Horse Librarians of Kentucky.  I want to read this now.  And I just saw that Earl also reviewed this in the same post as That Book Woman if you want to check that out.  Also, I saw that the illustrator, David Small, also illustrated a children's book titled The Library which I have since put a hold on.
