Why this book?:
I saw the second book in the series on Wowbrary and thought it sounded interesting, but of course I had to start with the first book in the series.
Comments:
This is a historical mystery set around the suffragette movement in England, a topic that is interesting in both positive and negative ways. I appreciate my rights (in America, but still) and believe I would have supported getting them, but I have more difficulty understanding the extreme and violent part of the movement. Perhaps that's part of what I appreciated about Dody. She appreciated her rights - to the point of becoming involved in more of a "man's" position, but she didn't have that violent attitude. After all, she was a doctor. So I liked her. I also liked Chief Inspector Pike, and I hope there is something between the two in future books.
I have to say I felt a horror at the descriptions of the woman being force fed. I remember watching clips of something like that going on in a mental hospital in a psych class and I was horrified then as well. On the other hand, while I personally abhor capital punishment and therefore didn't care for the hanging scene either, I was able to look at it more abstractly. Perhaps it was reading parts of Foucault's Dicipline and Punish during my college days that made the difference.
Anyway, I look forward to reading the next book, Antidote to Murder.
I really like this series, I am sure you will enjoy Antidote to Murder as well
