The soup is warm, and it's, if I may, sensual, and it provides a certain amount of comfort. And as it vanishes, spoonful by happy spoonful, you discover that you are in the perfect condition for whatever may come next. From p. 87 of Dzur by Steven Brust. It opened to the page I'm on. Food (as described above) doesn't have much to do with the story, but Vlad - the main character and narrator - is definitely a foodie and goes on about the food he eats or remembers in pretty much every Vlad Taltos book.
Ok, so what is he eating? Here is mine
ReplyDeleteGoodness--that doesn't sound like a quote from a fantasy book. It sounds like a food book.
ReplyDeleteDelicious teaser this week :) Here's my teaser.
ReplyDeleteOh, that just sets the stage for "whatever comes next" in an absolutely perfect, lovely way. You can just feel his enjoyment wafting off the screen.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the teaser!
Mine is at Bookishgal.
Bluestocking - it's Mushroom-Barley Soup from Valabar and Sons (Vlad's favorite restaurant).
ReplyDeleteBrenda - It does sound that way, especially considering "Mushroom-Barley Soup" is the chapter title. But, honest, it's a fantasy. =)
Susan - I agree. The delicious comfort of food, especially food described that way...
Phyl - The description's so vivid and Vlad's pleasure so real, I can even forget (temporarily) that I don't like mushrooms and would be picking at this dish in reality.
Beautiful teaser. Food experiences can make for great reading!
ReplyDeleteOkay, maybe I am just in a weird mood, but Mushroom-Barley Soup sounds pretty darn good! :)
