Book Description (from dust jacket):

Laurel was mesmerized, staring at the pale things with wide eyes. They were terrifyingly beautiful — too beautiful for words.

Laurel turned to the mirror again, her eyes on the hovering petals that floated beside her head. They looked almost like wings.

In this extraordinary tale of magic and intrigue, romance and danger, everything you thought you knew about faeries will be changed forever.

Comments:

I requested this from the local library, along with several other YA books, after reading some reviews on a blog. I had 7 books in and ready to be picked up when I wrote my review of Maggie Stiefvater's Lament: The Faerie Queen's Deception. Jan von Harz commented that she recommended Wings as a faerie book she thought I'd enjoy. With that recommendation, I decided to put Wings at the top of my to-be-read library books pile.

Overall, I did really enjoy this book. I found all the characters to be likeable (except the bad guys of course), especially Laurel and David. I was pleased to find that the faeries in this book are not creepy and even more pleased that the storyline behind the faeries is original. In fact, the only thing I was somewhat disappointed about is that, once again, there are two romantic interests. However, considering how uncommon paranormal YA books without this romantic conflict are (from my observations/reading experience), I'll overlook this. I'm certainly looking forward to reading the 2nd in this four book series, Spells (due in May).

  1. Totally agree...and I was a bit shocked as well. Not sure what I was expecting, but it wasn't fae. Love this book...drew me in emotionally.

  2. Well, I guess I had prior notice on the fairy thing. But even when people say a book has a different setting/background/whatever, I don't expect this different. That was a great surprise.

  3. Jo, this was back when I really kept my head in the sand. I had no clue whatsoever. Then I was like Wings, duh! What I thought even more cool was the cover. It looked like flower pedals which was the description in the book. Rarely do I see the publishers get the cover that right on the books. Or maybe they are getting better at book covers.

  4. Oops. I meant to mention the cover in my post and completely forgot! I agree, the cover's gorgeous and matches the story perfectly.

  5. I recently read this book and I know what you mean by the love triangle thing. It seems a new requirement to young adult is to have best friend love interest be one corner and the Edward-type guy be the third corner. Usually I can always tell which guy the main character wants/will choose. But I have no idea which it will be wings. At least that part of it was refreshing. Overall I too liked this book and can't wait for the next.

  6. Sarah - While I was practicing my patience waiting for the sequel, I checked out your blog. =P

Anyway, I noticed you're an aspiring author. Since your blog seems to focus on YA I'm assuming that's what you're trying to be published in(?). So I have a question for you. Do you plan to (or have already, I don't know how far you've gone with your writing), to follow this triangle trend/requirement? It would be sooo refreshing if you decide to skip it. =)

  7. Good question. I debated this. And no I skipped it. But...I made it so the reader believes her best guy friend is into her (and she does too) for the first have of the book...when in fact he's into the sister...does that sound too complicated.

  8. That's way better than the usual triangle. An no, not too complicated. Sounds like good happy-ending making, too. =)

Are you doing a single story? Or are you wanting to make a series out of this?

  9. I want to do just two. I think so many times the middle story is just that...the middle, filler. I want just the two. Of course, I probably won't ever write part 2 if part 1 never goes gets published.

  10. Definitely better 2 good books to 3 books with a mediocre book in the bunch.

Good luck with getting part 1 published then...

  11. We seem to have about the same taste in books. Perhaps when I finally do finish it you might want to read it for me. I have a couple critique partners already but I'm always looking for people who are will to read it. It will probably take me another month to finish it...or two.

  12. Sure. I've never done anything like that before. I don't know if my thoughts would be worth much, but at least I could tell you I enjoy it or if anything about it really stood out.
